Child Work

" I would still do immunisation but it would be psychological rather than biological”   Jonas Salk  (developed Polio vaccine).

Currently, children who 'do not behave' or are experiencing 'growing pains' are diagnosed with all sorts of disorders that usually require medication with unwanted side effects.

Treatment choices centers around medication or waiting for the child to outgrow the bad behaviour with negative consequences for all concerned. Children absorb knowledge and some bad behaviours are learned outside home, amongst their peers. Sometimes children 'act out' stresses or conflicts emerging from their immediate environment (home or school). If not addressed, these behaviours can have negative consequences in adulthood.

Mission Statement: "Committed to secure the rights of children".

Children are usually very open and receptive to positive change. I work with children in a variety of settings and provide a safe and challenging environment in which to explore the child’s issues. This often gives an insight into causes underlying 'bad behaviour'.

I use various child centred techniques: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), drawing, playing, metaphor, working with dreams, visualizations, assertiveness training and energetic techniques. These teach children to overcome obstacles, gain self confidence and esteem to allow them to develop into positive, happy, strong beings with a love of learning. The techniques used will protect children from negative emotional and mental blocks that may lead to depression and poor health in adulthood.

I generally work with the parent present for the protection and safety of the child and then this is reviewed if appropriate. I work with the whole family to see what dynamics are taking place within the family that is prodicing children to act out negatively

For the your child's safety and security I carry an Enhanced Police Check. (presented on request).

Bullying in Schools

This is very distressing for the bullied child. Some children keep their experiences to themselves because they are afraid and may have learned that help is unavailable.

Surrey Schools adhere to the "No Blames" anti-bullying policy which effectively blames the victim and their family.  Unfortunately bullying impacts children, families and society as a whole. In terms of health, social problems and educational disadvantage and underachievement.

Fortunately by Dan Norris MP, was able to challenge this damaging policy by directing himself to Mr. K. Brennan Minister for Children, Schools and Families who a move from No Blames Anti-bullying Policy.  During a House of Commons debate about school-bullying on the 17 October 2007 and the following exchange took place:

Dan Norris MP: Will my Hon. friend assure me that the Government's approach does not embrace the so-called 'No blame approach' to bullying?  About 18 months ago, in response to problems in Bristol schools, the then Liberal Democrat-run council gave out an instruction to schools that pupils should not be punished for bullying other pupils, and I am still angry about that.

Kevin Brennan: I give my Hon. friend the absolute assurance that the Government are not embracing the no blame approach. We have also made that clear to the Anti-Bullying Alliance. Bullies should always be punished. As we have discussed, further help might be required for bullies, their families and their parents, but I have no doubt whatever that it is a big mistake if the bully's actions have no real consequence. It is ultimately in the interests of the bully's own welfare and well-being that there should be such consequences.

Dan Norris MP added: "The Minister's assurance will come as welcome relief to parents, teachers and pupils that No Blame is dead. Bullying is wrong and bullies should always be punished."

This is a positive step to protect our children whilst in the Educational System. It is up to parents and teachers to ensure that this policy is eradicated because it inhibits healthy psychological development in children.

Psychological Studies show that Bullying causing stress, shrinks the Hippocampus (in the Limbic brain), preventing learning. Stress modifies hippocampal synaptic plasticity and spatial learning. Bullied children may develop psychosomatic symptoms (headaches & stomach aches) to avoid school & may produce in extreme cases school phobia. Other symptoms may involve depression, low self esteem, eating disorders, learning difficulties, self harming, substance and alcohol abuse, extreme bouts of raging, running away etc.

If your child is being bullied get help from the links below. Surrey Police works closely with Kidscape and do contact your MP or the above mentioned in Government.  Mr. J. Hunt, MP has been an invaluable source of support during my active campaign to improve the educational facilities for Surrey Children.  Remember your child deserves a good education in a safe and healthy school environment.
